Africa is famous for its vast sky. For some, it is the fiery sunsets that leave their imprint; for others, it is the endless canopy of stars that lingers in memory. And then there is sunrise; that soft unveiling of light that even the most reluctant early risers can’t help but fall for. Forever shifting, always captivating, the sky is the silent guide to every moment on safari. Nowhere is this felt more deeply than during our signature Sleepout Under the Stars.

Time + Tide Sleepout Under the Stars South Luangwa

After a morning on safari and a leisurely midday at camp, you pack a small bag and leave your room behind, though it remains yours should you wish to return. The afternoon is spent exploring on a game drive or a walking safari, following tracks, stories, and scents written across the land.

As the day draws to a close, the road bends and before you lies a tiny, hidden oasis, a place conjured just for you, for this one night of adventure.

Time + Tide Sleepout Under the Stars

As the last colours of dusk soften into twilight, the fire crackles and the air grows cool. Shadows lengthen, stars prick the heavens, and the wilderness hums with nocturnal life. It is in this quiet handover between day and night that the spell of a Time + Tide Sleepout begins. Lanterns glow softly, fireside sunset drinks beckon, hot showers wait nearby, and the evening unfolds under the stars.

The spirit here is one of discovery. With a guide, scout, chef and waiter at your side, you are free to let go, to sink into the night with nothing to think of but the wild beauty that surrounds you. Although the essence of a Sleepout is simplicity, every detail is quietly thought through, allowing comfort and wonder to move hand in hand.

In the South Luangwa, camp is set within a dry riverbed deep in the National Park. The top layer of sand still carries the warmth of the sun, but as you sink your bare feet in deeper, it cools. In the Lower Zambezi, the setting is altogether different. Set on the escarpment, you sleep above the ground with the world laid out beneath you; it is a place where perspective comes easily, where the vastness of the land and the intimacy of the moment meet.

Dinner is served under lantern light, a three-course meal conjured up in the wild by your private chef. Glasses are raised, stories are shared, and just when you think the night couldn’t be more beautiful, it’s time to retire to bed. Entirely see-through, the ‘tents’ are less like shelter and more like frames through which the heavens can be admired.

You slip beneath the covers of your custom-made bedroll and lie back, cocooned in comfort, as the stars stretch endlessly above you.

Time + Tide Sleepout Under the Stars

The lullaby is one you will never forget: a distant lion’s roar, the soft whoop of a hyena, the rising chorus of frogs and nightjars filling the dark with their songs and the gentle murmur of those sitting round the fire on night watch. These sounds, so unusual in our everyday lives and yet so deeply natural in their rhythm, are a reminder that you are part of something far larger, far wilder, than yourself.

Morning arrives gently. The stars dissolve into the paling sky, and the first notes of the dawn chorus drift through the air. You rise with the sun, painted gold by its light, and watch as the bush wakes once more. A full breakfast is served, and the day stretches before you, full of promise. Behind you, the camp is broken down quietly, leaving no trace of its existence; imprinted only in your memory.

Time + Tide Sleepout Under the Stars

The beauty of a sleepout lies in its contrasts. The thrill of adventure, balanced with the tenderness of comfort. The grandeur of Africa’s wilderness, made personal and intimate by the people you share it with and the team who bring it together. It feels at once like stepping back into the golden age of safari while also discovering a new adventure that is all yours.
