There are few things as meaningful as time spent together in nature with no distractions, no deadlines or homework, just the simple joy of being present. For many families, a safari in Zambia is more than just a holiday; it’s a return to what matters most.

At Time + Tide, we’ve seen how the bush has a way of bringing people back to themselves and to each other. Whether you’re travelling with little ones seeing their first elephant, teenagers ready to unplug, or grown-up children coming together for a rare reunion, all our camps offer a chance to gather, to explore, and to experience something extraordinary together.

For younger children, the bush is pure wonder.

Every day is a treasure hunt: a fresh lion track in the sand, the whoop of a hyena in the distance, a dung beetle rolling its prize down the road. Our guides are natural storytellers, endlessly patient, and genuinely excited to share the secrets of the bush with budding adventurers. They turn every drive into a living classroom, where questions are encouraged and curiosity is contagious. Children are invited to look closer, listen carefully, and begin to understand the rhythms of the wild. For many, it’s the start of a lifelong love for nature.

But this isn’t just a story for the little ones. Time in the bush has a way of softening the edges of adulthood, too. For families with older children, siblings in their twenties or thirties, and parents who rarely get time together, a Zambian safari is an invitation to reconnect. It’s sitting in quiet companionship as a herd of elephants crosses your path. It’s long, lazy brunches under a fig tree and storytelling around the fire as the stars come out.

Daily rituals in the wild, such as morning coffee stops, afternoon tea, and evening sundowners, create moments to pause together. And across all our camps, we’ve created spaces that invite connection. Every camp is stocked with board games like chess and backgammon, along with art kits filled with watercolours, charcoal and sketch pads. There’s something deeply satisfying about painting a hippo from life or capturing the curves of a baobab tree as the sun sets behind it. Or perhaps you want to try some yoga with your daughter, who has been practicing for years. This is the perfect time to come together, to share, and to grow. These small, quiet moments become memories, too.

A number of our camps have two-bedroom family tents or suites, and for larger families wanting a little more space and freedom to simply be together, our camps are available for exclusive use. Or, choose the ultimate privacy at Time + Tide Chongwe House; your own private safari home with a dedicated team to look after you. With your own guide and vehicle, you can shape each day to suit your family’s pace and preferences. Some might rise early for a sunrise game drive, while others sleep in and opt for a gentle canoe safari later on. Everyone comes back together for shared meals, afternoon swims, and evenings under the stars. It’s the kind of rare quality time that feels both relaxed and unforgettable.

Our positive impact on community at Time + Tide Safaris in the Lower Zambezi in Zambia working together with the Time + Tide Foundation. Treading lightly while making a positive and sustainable impact.

If you want your family to explore deeper, a visit to the Time + Tide Foundation can be a transformative experience.

Whether it’s meeting local students, learning about conservation, or simply understanding the importance of community in the places we call home, this is a chance to connect with something greater. For children, especially, it offers new perspectives and often becomes one of the most meaningful parts of the trip.

The entire Time + Tide team is fantastic with children and understands that flexibility is key to keeping everyone happy, which includes the food. Our ‘Little Explorers’ menu has all the favourites; think homemade macaroni and cheese, burgers and fresh, colourful fruit platters. And our chefs are always happy to try to replicate special meals that feel like home, whether that means a favourite breakfast pancake or something plain and comforting after a big day out.

What makes family safaris in Zambia so special isn’t just the wildlife (though that is unforgettable). It’s the way the experience makes space for connection, across generations, across life stages, and across different interests. Out here, the roles we play at home — parent, teenager, adult — seem to loosen. In the bush, wonder makes children of us all.
