The Time + Tide Foundation, as the philanthropic arm of the Time + Tide tourism brand, creates social value in the Time + Tide communities. The foundation invests in the future productivity of wildlife economies through community and school-based learning and focuses on female empowerment, health, home-based-education, student sponsorship and wildlife conservation.
Today, this work reaches more than 300 villages and 30 schools. In 2026, 570 primary beneficiaries are actively enrolled in our core programmes, alongside 8,900 secondary beneficiaries, with the Foundation’s work indirectly reaching a wider network of more than 19,000 residents.
Our Value Web
Our value web is at the core of who we are, focusing on four key pillars: community, conservation, sustainability and local economies, to ensure that all of our efforts go towards the safeguarding of some of these wild and precious places, the people, the communities and the generations to follow.
Through the Time + Tide Foundation, our commitment to conservation is translated into long-term, locally led programmes across Zambia and Madagascar. This work is designed around the priorities of the communities and protected areas in which we operate. Programmes are delivered directly within these communities, with clear objectives, ongoing measurement and a focus on lasting social and environmental change. They are not an addition to the guest experience; they are part of our responsibility to the places we call home.
Protecting Biodiversity
In Zambia, we work alongside established conservation organisations to strengthen anti-poaching initiatives, environmental education, human–wildlife coexistence and wildlife rehabilitation. In Madagascar, the Time + Tide Foundation takes a hands-on role. A dedicated environmental team at Miavana works across terrestrial and marine ecosystems around Nosy Ankao, supporting ecological monitoring, habitat protection, sustainable resource use and biodiversity recovery. This work is carried out in collaboration with local communities, environmental authorities, universities and conservation partners.
Empowering Girls and Women
The Female Empowerment Programme helps girls from remote communities recognise their self-worth, strengthen their academic potential and remain in education. Through weekly Girls Clubs, participants follow a structured curriculum covering literacy, self-esteem, sexual and reproductive health, the rights of women and girls, and menstrual health management. The Foundation also supports women who missed out on formal education, helping them develop practical skills, greater financial confidence and more sustainable livelihoods.
Creating More Inclusive Education
The Home-based Education Programme supports children with developmental differences who have historically faced significant barriers to education, healthcare and social inclusion. Individualised education and care plans are implemented with children in their homes, together with their guardians and trained community caregivers. The programme also works with schools and teachers’ assistants to help children enter formal education and participate more fully in community life.
Strengthening Local Livelihoods
Long-term conservation also depends upon communities having access to secure and sustainable livelihoods. In the Lower Zambezi, the Foundation and Time + Tide Chongwe have supported community farming by investing in seeds and helping local farmers expand the produce they can supply to the tourism industry. This strengthens local enterprise while allowing more tourism expenditure to remain within neighbouring communities.
Supporting Students Through Education
The Student Sponsorship Programme helps young people from rural and low-income communities continue through secondary education, providing sustained support to help them remain in school and reach their academic potential.
Improving Access to Healthcare
The Health Support Programme improves access to essential healthcare in remote communities where distance and limited local services can make treatment difficult to reach. Through locally delivered primary healthcare, referral support, family planning services and access to essential medicines, the Foundation responds directly to identified community health needs and helps strengthen continuity of care.
Lower Zambezi Foundation Focus
Supporting Education and Local Livelihoods
In the Lower Zambezi, the Time + Tide Foundation works with communities around Mugurameno to strengthen access to education and create more sustainable local livelihoods.
Mugurameno Primary School serves children from seven surrounding villages and forms an important foundation for the Foundation’s Student Sponsorship and Female Empowerment programmes. Support focuses on improving the learning environment and helping more pupils progress from primary into secondary education.
Alongside its education programmes, the Foundation and Time + Tide Chongwe have supported local farming initiatives by providing seeds and helping farmers broaden the produce they can supply to the tourism industry. This creates a more reliable local market, strengthens household income and allows more economic value to remain within neighbouring communities.
South Luangwa Foundation Impact
Supporting Education and Local Livelihoods
In South Luangwa, the Foundation’s work centres on education, inclusion and long-term support for children and families who face barriers to opportunity.
The Home-based Education Programme supports children with developmental differences through trained community caregivers, family guidance, health and nutritional support, and pathways into formal schooling. The programme also works with Sellah Academy and has trained and employed teaching assistants to support greater social inclusion within the classroom.
This work is complemented by long-standing investment in Yosefe Primary School. Over more than 30 years, Time + Tide has funded classrooms, teachers’ houses and salaries, a library, a borehole and ongoing school operations. The school also provides an important pathway into the Foundation’s Female Empowerment and Student Sponsorship programmes.
The Foundation has also supported extensive improvements at Hanada Orphanage, helping to create a safer and more suitable environment for children with special needs and encouraging broader local involvement in its long-term management.
