Our cultural excursions in South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi take you beyond the wilderness and into the lives of the people who call these places home. Through respectful, guided visits, you’ll witness how your stay directly supports conservation, education, and community empowerment – the cornerstones of our Time + Tide Foundation.
Come, let us show you the difference you have made.
Lower Zambezi Excursion
Your journey begins on the river, crossing from Time + Tide Chongwe to the nearby Mugurameno village. Here, community and conservation go hand in hand. This guided experience shares the tangible outcomes of your presence — from young girls entering secondary school for the first time to fresh produce on your plate, grown just downriver by local farmers.
Home-Based Education
Through the Home-Based Education Programme, we assist children with special needs to gain independence and enrol in formal schools. Your excursion will start by visiting one of our beneficiary families, learning how community stigmas and lack of knowledge made it impossible for parents to address their children’s needs. With the help of trained volunteer caregivers, however, parents have witnessed significant developmental strides with their children and, as a result, an improvement in the quality of life for their whole family.
Female Empowerment Programme
Next, we will pass through Mugurameno Primary School on our way to meet the girls in our Female Empowerment Programme. With a student to teacher ratio of 50:1, the school decided to split pupils into morning and afternoon sessions to reduce class sizes, which means students have less time in school. For girls who are at risk of failing, we designed an extracurricular programme to provide them with academic support, with an emphasis on English language and literacy and to help build their self-esteem. You will meet the girls outside of a local education centre and observe some of the teaching techniques we use to help girls improve academically and express themselves.
Farming Project
On your way back to the harbour, you will visit farmers and see their beautiful vegetable gardens along the Zambezi River. In 2019, the Time + Tide Foundation and Time + Tide Chongwe invested in local farming activities by purchasing new seeds so that farmers could expand their produce offerings for the tourism industry. You can see the origin of the fresh produce you enjoy in camp and learn from the farmers how they manage the challenges of seasonal markets and clever wildlife!
